About Discover Dance With Elon

Discover Dance With Elon is a one-day event, Saturday, November 13, designed to introduce high school students to the potential of studying dance at the collegiate level. This event will offer students the chance to take dance classes in a variety of genres while also introducing them to the administrative and business possibilities available in dance. Students will have the opportunity to attend the Elon Performing Arts Fall Dance Concert, meet with Elon University Admissions, and partake in a photography session with the purpose of providing them a dance photograph for potential audition purposes. Students will have the ability to cater their experience with the option to select classes to fit their interests. This unique experience offers the perspective of current students, professors, and admissions representatives for attendees to receive well-rounded insight and to decide if dance is the path for them.

*Note: this event will take place in person but will adhere to Elon University COVID-19 guidelines. See below for details.

Session Descriptions

West African Dance: Traditional West African dance & rhythms with live drumming.

Capoeira: Capoeira is a Brazilian martial arts dance form where we will explore learning the fundamentals, the “game”, and it’s cultural origin.

Contemporary Rep: A contemporary class with repertoire from the Fall Dance Concert.

Contemporary Ballet: Contemporary ballet takes place at the barre and center. It is ballet with a twist! Movements and class exercises are inspired by many other forms of dance and they are performed to contemporary music.

Pilates: Pilates is a full body conditioning system designed to develop and improve strength, flexibility, posture, and coordination. In this session, we will focus on the Mat I exercise sequences and their application to dance technique. Mats will be provided.

Dance Administration: Do you want to open your own dance studio? Learn how to start a new dance-based business and the steps you can take now as a student.

Dance Photography: Lights, camera, action! This class will focus on creating and capturing dance photography. Students will gain experience behind and in front of cameras. Bring a camera or camera phone if you have one. If not, we will have cameras to share.

Dance Composition: In this workshop, we will work to define and locate our individual movement aesthetics in relation to choreography. By discovering, then challenging, what aspects of choreography and performance we are resistant to, we can begin formulating artistic values and movement inquiries.
