The Light We Cannot See

Choreographer: Jen Guy Metcalf

Music Credit: Music by The Haxan Cloak, Ben Frost, and radio broadcasts from the British Broadcasting Corporation with text by Sophie Adamson

Costume Coordinator: Jen Guy Metcalf

Lighting Design: Fern Middleton

Performers: Anaya Agard, Trudie Arling, Brooke Goldstein, Jessica Guidice, Winell Henriquez, Analiese Jacobson, Reagan Nasky (11/14 at 7:30pm & 11/15 at 2pm), Ashley Rossignol (11/15 at 7:30pm & 11/16 at 2pm), Alydia Wheeler

Inspiration for this piece comes from the book, “All the Light We Cannot See,” by Anthony Doerr. According to Doerr, the title “is a reference first and foremost to all the light we literally cannot see: that is, the wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that are beyond the ability of human eyes to detect (radio waves, of course, being the most relevant)… It’s also a metaphorical suggestion that there are countless invisible stories still buried within World War II .” The sound/musical score for this piece incorporates radio broadcasts from the 1940s during WWII and voice recordings by Dr. Sophie Adamson.

Keep Listening

Choreographers: Evelyn Ealey and Maddie Milner

Music Credit: “Last Light” by Son Lux, editing done by Maddie Milner

Costume Coordinator: Heidi Jo Schiemer

Lighting Design: Casey Spielman

Performers: Evelyn Ealey, Maddie Milner

What happens when power dynamics are challenged? A tense interplay unfolds between two forces, where power is not static but constantly negotiated. Push and pull through cycles of resistance and surrender—and how defiance can ignite even under constraint. In our fast lives, are you listening to what could be the last light?

Yoke

Choreographer: Renay Aumiller

Music Credit: “Implode” by Laake, “Sunrise” by Hofesh Shechter, “Candyland” by CocoRosie; edited for the purpose of this performance

Costume Coordinator: Renay Aumiller

Lighting Design: Fern Middleton

Performers: Alana Abraham, Lucy Burk, Simone Goldenberg, Analiese Jacobson, Belle Lasecki, Myah Shepherd, Emma Vanags

Originally created during the 2023 NC Choreographers Residency in Charlotte, North Carolina, Yoke explores the tension between movement and metal, examining how these materials and gestures both embody and challenge traditional constructs of gender and power. Through the interplay of weight, resistance, and resonance, Yoke investigates the burden of societal binaries and the fluidity that emerges when those boundaries are tested and transformed.

Distorted Mirrors

Choreographer: Winell Henriquez

In time, we all drift in place – aimlessly from one situation to another, deviating from expected course, without fixed purpose or direction. Special thanks to my cast of dancer-collaborators for their creative energy and commitment this semester to making this new work together, and to the Elon Dance Program for inviting me as a guest choreographer for their Fall Dance Concert!
